For many years, the development of antiviral drugs that can increase the chance of cure from viral hepatitis C has been underway.In 2014, SOVALDI (Sovaldi) from the American pharmaceutical company Gilead appeared on the global pharmaceutical market.
The drug's active ingredient, sofosbuvir, inhibits the enzyme NS5B (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase), which catalyzes the virus replication processes. In other words, SOVALDI blocks the formation of new copies of the hepatitis C virus.

Sovaldi\ sofosbuvir: success rate
SOVALDI has been shown to be effective in clinical trials as one of the components of complex therapy for chronic hepatitis C genotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4. SOVALDI is not intended for monotherapy; sofosbuvir is administered in combination with ribavirin or with ribavirin and peginterferon alfa.
SOVALDI can be used in the treatment of patients with HCV infection who have HIV infection or hepatocellular cancer.
According to studies, the efficacy of therapy of patients with hepatitis C genotype 1 and 4 with the combination of Sovaldi, ribavirin and peginterferon alfa for 12 weeks is 89% and 96%, respectively.
The efficacy of therapy in patients with hepatitis C virus genotype 2 with the combination of Sovaldi and ribavirin for 12 weeks is 93%.
The efficacy of therapy of viral hepatitis C in patients with viral genotype 3 with the combination of Sovaldi and ribavirin for 24 weeks is 84%.
Viral hepatitis C is a severe chronic liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus. Infection in most cases occurs with blood: during hemotransfusions, use of contaminated syringes, much less often through sexual contact and transplacental.
For a long time, the disease is not clinically manifested. However, over time, inflammatory changes in liver tissue can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer.
In 2013, the use of SOVALDI was approved by the FDA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. According to experts, SOVALDI is the first drug that has demonstrated safe and effective treatment of chronic hepatitis C with a specific genotype of the virus. In some cases, SOVALDI can be used without peginterferon alfa.
Sovaldi\ sofosbuvir: how is the drug tolerated?
Gilead carefully analyzes all signals from patients about possible adverse reactions to therapy. The most common reactions during treatment of hepatitis C with the combination of SOVALDI and ribavirin were headache and fatigue. In the case of the combination of: SOVALDI, ribavirin and peginterferon alfa, the adverse reactions in 20% were headache, fatigue, nausea and anemia.
The drug should not be used during pregnancy. No studies have been conducted to determine the concentration of the drug in breast milk, accordingly, SOVALDI is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. Also, the use of SOVALDI in patients under 18 years of age has not been studied, i.e. the drug is contraindicated for use in children.
Before starting therapy, the patient should inform his doctor about concomitant diseases and medications he is taking.
