Breakthrough in the treatment of genotype 1 HCV infection
In October 2014, the FDA, the leading U.S. food and drug regulatory organization, approved Harvoni, a combination drug, for the treatment of HCV genotype 1 in adults.
To date, Harvoni is the only drug for the treatment of HCV genotype 1a and 1b that does not contain interferon and ribavirin.
Harvoni is a combination drug with a fixed composition. One tablet contains ledipasvir 90 mg and sofosbuvir 400 mg. The active substances of the drug inhibit the proteins of the hepatitis C virus: NS5A and NS5B, which leads to the cessation of virus replication. Depending on the disease history of a particular person (received specific therapy or not), as well as the state of the liver (cirrhosis) and viral load, the course of therapy with the drug Harvoni is 8, 12 or 24 weeks. According to clinical trials, Harvoni therapy is effective in 94-99% of cases.

What do you need to know about Harvoni?
The drug Harvoni (Harvoni) is available in tablets of 28 pieces in one bottle. The scheme of intake is simple: one tablet per day, regardless of food intake. The duration of taking the drug is determined by the attending physician.
Standard regimens for the administration of Harvoni:
- Patients who have not received specific therapy for hepatitis C, with or without cirrhosis, are recommended a course of treatment of 12 weeks. The exception may be patients who have not received previous therapy, without cirrhosis, if the viral load is less than 6000000 IU/mL. In this case, the course of therapy can be shortened to 8 weeks.
- Patients without cirrhosis, who have previously received antiviral therapy for HCV infection, are recommended a 12-week course of therapy with Harvoni.
- Patients with liver cirrhosis who have already received antiviral therapy of hepatitis C virus are recommended a 24-week course of therapy.
Important! There is no data on the use of Harvoni in pregnant and lactating women, as well as in children.
Before starting the therapy, the patient should inform his attending physician about the drugs he is taking, as well as about concomitant diseases, especially liver and kidney.
According to patient observation, taking the drug Harvoni is not accompanied by severe adverse reactions and is generally well tolerated. In some cases, a feeling of fatigue and headache was noted.
